Para Special Forces

The Pride of the Indian Army

When we talk about the most elite and courageous soldiers of India, the name Para SF (Special Forces) always stands tall.
These men operate in silence, strike with precision, and represent the highest level of courage, endurance, and patriotism.

At Doon Defence Academy, we salute their unmatched bravery — and help young aspirants prepare to follow in their footsteps.

Who Are the Para SF?

The Para (Special Forces), popularly known as Para SF, are the elite special operations unit of the Indian Army.
Their maroon beret is a symbol of ultimate honour and grit. Known as the “Red Devils”, they are trained to perform missions that require extreme skill, intelligence, and fearlessness.

Their motto — “Men Apart, Every Man an Emperor” — perfectly captures the spirit of every Para SF commando.

Roles and Operations of Para SF

Para SF commandos are specialists in high-risk operations that demand speed, secrecy, and surgical precision.

Some of their main operations include:

  • Counter-Terrorism & Counter-Insurgency: Neutralizing threats in J&K and insurgent zones.

  • Surgical Strikes & Cross-Border Raids: Swift missions to destroy enemy bases.

  • Special Reconnaissance: Collecting crucial intel in enemy territories.

  • Hostage Rescue & Direct Action Missions.

  • Joint Missions: Working with MARCOS, Garud, and NSG commandos.

They’ve played key roles in operations like Surgical Strikes (2016), Operation Cactus, and Operation Meghdoot in Siachen.

Para SF Selection Process: The Toughest in the Indian Army

The selection for Para SF is one of the hardest in the world — only the mentally and physically strongest survive.

Selection stages:

  1. Volunteering: Candidates must first be a part of the Indian Army — via NDA, CDS, or direct recruitment.

  2. Initial Screening: Physical tests and interviews.

  3. Probation Period (3 Months or More):

    • The most brutal test of endurance and willpower.

    • Continuous physical stress, limited sleep, extreme punishments, and psychological tests.

  4. Airborne Training (Agra):

    • Parachute jumps and airborne operations.

  5. Advanced SF Training:

    • Weapons, survival, demolition, unarmed combat, and intelligence gathering.

Less than 10% of candidates make it to the end. Those who do, earn the Maroon Beret — a badge of honour.

Para SF Training: Forged to Be the Best

Para SF commandos undergo multi-environment training to operate in deserts, mountains, jungles, and enemy zones.

Key areas of Para SF training:

  • Airborne Operations: HALO/HAHO jumps and air insertion.

  • Weapons Proficiency: Mastering Indian and foreign firearms.

  • Survival Skills: Living off the land, even in hostile environments.

  • Explosives & Demolition: Handling and defusing bombs.

  • Mountain & Jungle Warfare: Conducted at elite training schools in India.

  • Unarmed Combat: Techniques inspired by martial arts and Krav Maga.

Their motto isn’t just words — it’s a way of life. Para SF commandos are trained to adapt, improvise, and overcome.

Para SF Fitness Standards

Aspirants who wish to become Para SF must meet extraordinary fitness levels — far beyond regular Army standards.

Typical benchmarks include:

  • 5 km run in under 20 minutes

  • 40 push-ups and 40 sit-ups in 1 minute each

  • 14 pull-ups

  • 20 km endurance march with a 25 kg backpack

  • Strong swimming and stamina levels

But the real test lies in mental toughness — never giving up, no matter how hard it gets.

How to Become a Para SF Commando

There is no direct entry into Para SF. You must first join the Indian Army.

Steps:

  1. Join the Army through NDA, CDS, or Army Recruitment.

  2. Serve in a regular unit and then volunteer for Para Regiment.

  3. Clear the selection and probation to earn the Para SF badge.

Your journey to Para SF begins with discipline, fitness, and determination — and the right guidance from experts.
